Prof. Emmanuel Agius will deliver a lecture and participate in a seminar on "The Ethical Challenges of Biotechnology in Contemporary Europe".

Modern biotechnology has raised high expectations, in particular regarding novel therapeutic approaches (e.g. gene therapy), which have not materialized as quickly as anticipated. Moreover, certain modern biotechnology applications raise new issues and spark controversial discussions involving the broader public (e.g. genetically modified crops, cloned animals for food production, human embryonic stem cells, or use of personal genetic data). What can European values enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the Lisbon Treaty contribute to these biotechnological challenges?
