From the history of the Institute of Pathology

The first pathology department in the Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady was established in 1906 as a dissection department under the direction of Prof.Honl. The department consisted of the dissection room and a laboratory and was located in the former hospital chapel. With the increasing demands in the early thirties of the 20th century the department expanded, mainly due to chief physician Stolz who was the head of the department until 1929. The new laboratories in pavilion E and a small menagerie were built. Dr.Stolz also initiated the planning and building of pavilion CH, that was planned as a generous residency for the department. However, after the building was opened in 1936, it was transformed into the prof. Prusik´s Department of Internal Medicine. During the World War II after the closure of universities the department became a working place for many famous morphologists – prof.Frankenberger, prof.Zlabek, prof. Bednar and prof.Vanecek. After the war the pavilion CH was changed from the department of medicine again to the department of pathology with service staring June 1 1947. Nevertheless, the pavilion became the siege of departments of microbiology, serology, hematology and biochemistry as well.

After the formation of medical faculty in 1952 the department was changed to the Institute of Pathology responsible for both education and pathology service . The Head of the Institute from 1952 until now were: Doc. MUDr. Štolz (1952-1971), Prof.MUDr. J. Dobiáš, DrSc. (1971-1975), Doc. MUDr. J. Blažek, CSc. (1975-1977), Prof. MUDr. M. Vorreith, CSc. (1977-1987), Doc. MUDr. V. Rychterová, CSc. (1987-2000). From January 1 2001 is the head of Institute Prof. MUDr. Václav Mandys, CSc.
