Project GP in Šumava

Nine 5th-year students had an opportunity to participate in a two-week Šumava Doctor Internship, organized by MUDr. Rudolf Baloun under the patronage of KPL. The unique project was designed to familiarize students with the duties and working conditions of a GP in the Šumava Czech-German border region, pass on some practical skills, and cultivate closer relations with the community in the region.

Every morning, the students practised in their assigned clinics and offices in Sušice, Volyn, Neureichenau and Zwiesel. The afternoon programme consisted of presentations on interesting case studies and thematic seminars held by external doctors. The attendees were given training in various activities such as blood sampling, physical examination, IV therapy, ultrasonography, or evaluation of laboratory test results.

The greatest highlight was a chance to accompany the supervising doctors back to their homes to learn more about life in the border region. Most of the students’ free time was spent discovering the beauty of the Šumava natural heritage, making many beautiful memories. The internship inspired many participants to further explore the field of General Practice Medicine.
