Project Narrative:

Dysfunction and apoptosis of pancreatic β-cells are among the key factors contributing in type 2 diabetes development. Many factors affect β-cells, e.g. chronically increased intake of fatty acids (especially saturated species) and chronic hypoxia in pancreas, e.g.  due to sleep apnea. Epidemiological studies suggest that environmental pollution (e.g. DDT, DDE, HCH) plays a role in the worldwide epidemy of diabetes mellitus as well.

Exact molecular mechanisms by which the above mentioned as well other detrimental factors affect β-cell function and viability are not elucidated yet. To reveal these mechanism, methods of cell and molecular biology (Western blot, ELISA, FACS, confocal microscopy, siRNA, CRISPR, etc.) will be employed. As experimental model, human and animal β-cell lines will be used. The results will eventually be verified on isolated islets of Langerhans.

Requirements for student applicants:

Candidates should have a master´s degree in medicine, molecular biology, biochemistry or a similar field. We are looking for a motivated and creative Ph.D. student interested in biomedical research, with an active approach to solve the topic. We offer work on a scientifically attractive topic under the guidance of experienced laboratory staff, the opportunity to present results at foreign conferences, and implement foreign internships.
