About
Summer School of Clinical Acid-Base and Homeostasis is an intensive course focused on acid-base and related topics led by experts in the field. The course will take you from basics to advanced level in 4 days of theoretical lectures and practical workshops in which real patients’ cases are discussed in small groups. The key objective is to help participants learn, thoroughly understand and gain confidence in reading and interpreting blood gas analyses in acutely ill patients
Target audience
Trainees and specialists in intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, internal medicine and all other disciplines that use blood-gas analysis as a diagnostic tool. Motivated medical students, critical care nurses and advanced critical care practitioners are also welcome.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course, attendees should be able to:
Read and interpret acid–base status with confidence at the bedside.
Apply both the classical bicarbonate-centred approach and a simplified quantitative physicochemical model of acid–base at the bedside, whilst understanding their complementarity and limitations.
Discuss the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and management of osmolality disorders.
Prescribe infusion fluids with an awareness of their effect on haemodynamics, organ function and acid–base.
Prevent and manage fluid overload in acutely ill patients.
