New Edition of Talking Medicine: A Joint Project of Two Departments

A close collaboration between the Department of Languages and Medical Terminology and the Department of Nursing has resulted in a revised edition of the textbook series Talking Medicine, a four-volume series dedicated to teaching medical Czech to international medical students. Authors Iveta Čermáková and Tereza Bakusová now present the first two volumes of the renewed series:

  • The first volume introduces students to medical Czech. It provides an overview of essential medical terminology and focuses on everyday practical situations in interaction with patients, including paediatric care. Through dialogues, exercises, vocabulary lists, useful phrases, and recordings, it develops communication skills and gives students a solid foundation for further study.

  • The second volume is devoted to taking medical history—an essential component of patient care across all medical specialties. It offers a variety of dialogues and exercises that foster both active production and comprehension, complemented by examples of medical documents and authentic recordings. The emphasis is placed on the communicative function of the language and on preparing students for real-life situations in hospital settings.

Both textbooks aim to make teaching more effective and to help international students integrate smoothly into the Czech healthcare environment. Two further volumes of the series are planned for 2026.
